Chile's government is in advanced conversations with the European Union (EU) to become an active associate of the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), sources in Santiago have told IHS Jane's .
The negotiations are said to be at an advanced stage and an agreement is expected to be signed by the end of this year, similar to one between the EU and New Zealand that was inked in April 2012.
Such a pact would make Chile the first South American country to be associated with the EU in the security and defence realm.
The agreement's terms would see Chile commit military and police forces to take part in EU-led security and stabilisation operations that are aimed at crisis management and peacekeeping.
